Overview
Gifts of appreciated securities
Chain Bridge Bank, N.A. can accept gifts of appreciated securities (securities that have increased in value since they were acquired) for its nonprofit clients and political committee clients alike, including federal and state committees, PACs, and 527 organizations. The service is provided through the agency, custody, and investment management accounts of the Trust & Wealth Department, a department of a national bank “authorized to exercise full trust powers under 12 C.F.R. Part 9.”
In practice, the donor’s broker delivers the securities to the client’s account at the Bank. The Trust & Wealth Department receives the shares and then retains or sells them according to the account’s objective and the client’s instructions, with sale proceeds credited to the account. The Trust & Wealth Department serves clients nationwide and across Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C. region from the Bank’s office in McLean, Virginia.

Who the service is for
Political committees and nonprofits alike
Political organizations
Political committees
Federal and state political committees, PACs, Super PACs, and 527 organizations can receive in-kind contributions of appreciated stock from eligible contributors, subject to applicable contribution limits. The Trust & Wealth Department can receive the donated securities into the committee’s account and, at the treasurer’s instruction, sell them and credit the proceeds to the committee’s operating account at the Bank.
Valuation and reporting of in-kind contributions are governed by the FEC or applicable state law and remain the committee’s responsibility, working with its own counsel or compliance firm. See Political Committees for the Bank’s committee banking services.
Charitable and exempt organizations
Nonprofit organizations
Charities, foundations, trade associations, and other nonprofit organizations can accept donated securities through an agency, custody, or investment management account with the Trust & Wealth Department. Many donors prefer to give appreciated securities rather than cash; an account that can receive them removes a practical barrier to that gift.
See Nonprofit Organizations for the Bank’s nonprofit banking services.
How gifts are handled
Three steps, according to your account
-
The donor initiates the transfer
The donor instructs their broker to deliver the securities to the client’s account with the Trust & Wealth Department. The relationship team provides the delivery instructions.
-
The Trust & Wealth Department receives the securities
The shares arrive in the client’s agency, custody, or investment management account and are recorded for the client’s records.
-
Retain or sell, per the arrangement
Exercising the Bank’s fiduciary powers under 12 U.S.C. § 92a and 12 C.F.R. Part 9, the Trust & Wealth Department retains or sells the securities according to the account’s objective and the client’s instructions. Sale proceeds are credited to the account.
How your account type applies
- Investment management and agency accounts: the Trust & Wealth Department handles the gift consistent with the account’s agreed objective.
- Custody accounts: the client retains investment authority; the Department holds the assets and acts on the client’s instructions.
- Political committee accounts: the treasurer, or the committee’s compliance firm, directs receipt and sale; the Department acts on those instructions.
